Information, tips and instructions
Young people who are used to using smartphones often find simple tasks like unzipping RAR files quite challenging. To help beginners overcome this obstacle, we've created this guide. It will walk you through the process of using RAR tools—from downloading and installing, to compressing and unzipping files. This guide aims to make these tasks straightforward and easy to understand, so you can effortlessly manage your files. Let's get started.
A RAR file is like a digital suitcase that packs several files into one. It reduces their size, making storage and sharing easier. RAR files can hold anything from documents to music and movies, and they're created with a tool called WinRAR.
If you want to learn more about RAR in a thorough and precise manner, click here.
Don't want to download a tool or can't? You can use online extraction services. Click the button below to select the file you want to extract.
Please rest assured that the file won't be uploaded; it only uses local browser features.
To open a RAR file, think of it like taking things out of a suitcase. Here's how to do it:
Right-click on the RAR file. If you see an option that says "Extract to," click it. Choose a folder where you can easily find the files, then wait. The time it takes depends on the number and size of the files.
WinRAR: The official tool for RAR files, but it may have ads and charges.
7-Zip (recommended): Completely free with no ads.
The Unarchiver: This is a free app available on the Mac App Store. It supports a wide range of archive formats, including RAR. Download it, install it, and use it to extract your RAR files.
Keka: Another free app that can handle RAR files. It's more feature-rich and also supports other formats like ZIP and 7z.
Terminal: If you prefer using the command line, install unrar using Homebrew (brew install unrar), and then use the command unrar x filename.rar to extract the files.
Online Tools: Use online tools like B1 Online Archiver or Archive Extractor to open RAR files directly in your browser if you can't install apps.
Install the Unrar Tool:
Type sudo apt-get install unrar and press Enter.
If prompted, enter your password and confirm the installation.
Navigate to the RAR File Location:
Use the cd command to go to the directory where your RAR file is located. For example, if your file is in the Downloads folder, type cd ~/Downloads and press Enter.
Extract the RAR File:
Type unrar x filename.rar and press Enter. Replace filename.rar with the name of your RAR file.
Your files will be extracted to the same directory.
Check Extracted Files:
Use the ls command to list the files in your directory and verify that the RAR file was extracted.
From my experience you just start the decompression on the first file and then it connects the rest and extracts it however it needs to in order to complete the process.
Error Message: "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged" or "The file is split into parts."
Solution: If it's a multi-part archive, ensure that all parts (e.g., part1.rar, part2.rar, etc.) are in the same folder. You must have all parts of the archive to extract the contents successfully.
Check if all parts (e.g., part1.rar, part2.rar, etc.) are present and not missing.
Make sure the file extensions are correct (e.g., .rar, .r01, .r02).
We have tested it to work with Windows, MacOS, Linux (e.g. Ubuntu, Mint, Debian), Android, ChromeOS (Chromebook), iOS (iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch)..
We are continuously updating the system, so ensure you are using the latest version of one of the popular browsers or their variants (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera).
File Compression: Supports multiple formats, including RAR and ZIP, to efficiently reduce file sizes.
Multimedia Optimization: Automatically selects the best compression method for multimedia files, executables, and object libraries.
Split Archives: Allows splitting large archives into smaller parts for easier storage and transfer.
Encryption: Uses AES 256-bit encryption to protect archives with passwords, ensuring data security.
Password Manager: Integrated feature to manage passwords for protected archives.
Recovery Record: Adds recovery records to help repair damaged archives.
Backup Options: Offers advanced backup options with timestamps and version retention.
Drag-and-Drop: Fully supports drag-and-drop functionality for ease of use.
Multivolume Archives: Supports the creation of multivolume archives and self-extracting archives (SFX).
Unicode Support: Handles Unicode file names without any issues.
Virus Scan: Built-in virus scanner to prevent unpacking infected archives.
Always download RAR files from reliable sources to avoid downloading compressed files that contain malicious software or viruses. If you create RAR files and they contain important data, use complex passwords to protect them, preventing leaks during transmission.
ZIP: A widely used archive format that supports lossless data compression.
7Z: The file format used by 7-Zip, known for its high compression ratio.
TAR: Commonly used in Unix and Linux systems for archiving files.
